My last update coincided with a heatwave and here we go again with another few days of high temperatures. We should spare a thought for greenkeepers as they cope with our unpredictable climate during the peak playing season.
Firstly thank you to everyone who played in, and supported, my County Captains days in July. It was great to see many old friends and some new faces too. Oakmere Park Admirals teams triumphed on both days: congratulations to Lynne Moon, Helen Norris, Karen Goodwin and Andrea Pritchard, the Sunday winners and Yan Tjon, Koon Fai Wong, T C Chan and Khing Shing - Monday winners. My thanks also to the ladies from Wollaton, my non golfing cousin Stef and all the staff at Wollaton who provided such wonderful support on both days. Thank you for supporting the raffle which raised over £300 for the first team funds.
The Summer Meeting & Vets Trophy competition was held at Rushcliffe. The course and conditions on the day provided a stern challenge for all. Well done to Jayne Barrs, Beeston Fields, who was the overall nett and over 50s winner and to Jan Hooley, Stanton-on-the-Wolds, who was victorious in the Over 70s category. Franky Harper, Oakmere Commanders, won the overall gross and Lesley Morris, Notts Ladies, the over 50's gross.
Our next competition is the Autumn Meeting & Vets Cups at Norwood Park on 8th September and entries are still open. Please do consider entering the individual competitions, they are a great way to play different courses and meet fellow golfers from clubs around the county.
Congratulations to Rushcliffe GC and Stanton-on-the-Wolds GC who will be contesting the Ladies Interclub Foursomes final at Norwood Park on 1st September.
You will have read the County Second Team match reports. Senior Vice Captain, Di, has been leading the team, ably supported by her assistant Vice Susie and as reported there have been several new faces in the squad this summer with a mix of experience and youth. Our junior programme is really important as evidenced by the progress that Amelia Hothersall, Millie Brown and Ellie Wang have made this season.
In July I had a great day at Sherwood Forest GC watching the English Girls Open Strokeplay Championship. Millie Marsh and Elizabeth Wilson both made the cut and played all four rounds with Lizzie finishing fifth overall. Congratulations to Sherwood for hosting a superb championship.
Other Notts highlights from the national and international scene: Maddie Smith made the match play stages of the English Women’s Amateur Championships, Amelia Wan played in final qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open just missing out on a place at Royal Porthcawl. Elizabeth Wilson and Amelia Wan were selected for the England Girls and Women’s teams for the Home International matches and contributed to the overall success for England in both competitions.
Maddie will be returning to Washington State University and Amelia will shortly be starting her golf scholarship at Baylor University in Texas. We wish them both well. Perhaps they will be inspired by former NCLGA first teamer, Esme Hamilton, who achieved a fabulous second place in the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open on the LET in June.
Stay safe in the heatwave and enjoy the remainder of the main golf season.
