Centenary Lunch

The Centenary Lunch club! The Centenary Committee of NCLGA (Joan Underwood, Jane Brewer, Wendy Nicholl & Maureen Clarke) organised a very successful lunch at Notts Golf Club on the 11th September.  Past Captains, Presidents and clubs were invited to attend.  75 ladies were present to listen to a history of  Ladies golf in general and Notts Ladies in particular, given by Jane Brewer and personal reminiscences of playing in and for Notts by Wendy Nicholl.  Both very entertaining!  Each lady present, received a small memento of a coaster with our Centenary Crest painted on it by our junior organiser Jane England.

Harriet has good summer of golf

Harriet Owers-BradleyCongratulations to Harriet Owers-Bradley (Wollaton) who has just returned to university in the USA after a successful summer of golf in the UK! Not only did Harriet win the Midland Ladies Championship at Rothley in July, but came 4th in the Pleasington Putter (having the best afternoon round) and a top 10 finish in Porters Park Centenary. To cap it all, Harriet then finished 61st out of 120 in the Ladies British Strokeplay at Malone GC - a great year Harriet, good luck for your next year at Yale!

Harriet wins Midland Ladies

Harriet Owers-BradleyCongratulations to Harriet Owers-Bradley (Wollaton) who won the Midland Ladies Championship at Rothley Park GC on Tuesday 1st July. Harriet, who is currently studying at Yale University in the USA, qualified as top seed for the matchplay stage with gross scores of 69 & 73! She then went on to win the title (beating one of our Leicestershire rivals in the semi's!) beating Samantha Birks of Wolstanton by 4&3, & played, I understand from one of the Championship organisers brilliant golf throughout the 3 days!

Other Notts players that qualified for the Championship knock out stage were Katie Best (Sherwood), Alex Peters (Notts) & Emma Newlove (Notts) but unfortunatly all 3 lost their first round matches

In the Flight 2 matchplay stage Notts were represented by Emma Howie (Cotgrave), Emily Cheshire (Notts), Sharon Hewer (Sherwood) & Lianna Bailey (Rushcliffe). Emma beat Emily to progress to the 2nd round along with Sharon, though both girls then lost their next game on the 18th. Lianna was beaten in the first round by the eventual winner.

Further good news was that the Notts team of Alex, Katie & Harriet won the Team Trophy (best 2 from 3) by 10 shots (from Leicestershire!!) with a total of 293. Alex also won the 1st Junior prize with a 151 total

NCLGA Championship - Alex beats Janet at Sherwood

Janet, Emily, Marion Harris, Alex & EmmaCongratulations to Alex Peters (Notts) who won her first NCLGA Championship at Sherwood on Thursday 14th, beating Janet Collingham (Sherwood) 1up. Alex is the youngest ever Champion and along with her mum, Ann, are the only mother & daughter to have held our Championship.

There were some excellent performances by many, but especially the Juniors -  Alex, who reduced her handicap to +1  and is the lowest handicapped 14 year old in England, Emma Newlove (Notts) who reduced her handicap from 12 to 10 to be 3rd seed and Emily Cheshire (Notts) who, off 15 handicap, qualified as 4th seed and took 3 shots off her handicap in the process!

Alex and Ann Peters win Mothers and Daughters

Ann & Alex PetersNottinghamshire 14-year-old Alex Peters teamed up with her mother, Ann (both Notts), to claim their first victory in the Mothers and Daughters 27-hole open scratch foursomes at Royal Mid Surrey in Richmond.

Alex, from the English Women’s Golf Association U18 Squad, became one of the youngest winners of this traditional event since it was first played in 1932. She adds it to a host of other titles which include the Midlands’ ladies and the 2006 English U13 girls’ championships.

The scratch golfer and her five-handicap mother ended the winning run of seasoned competitors, Liz Boatman from Royal Worlington and her daughter Alex Howe from Royal County Down. The runners-up included another 14-year-old. Charlotte Griffith, an eight- handicap from Walton Heath, played with her mother Christine, a former professional. They coped well in the increasingly windy conditions in the afternoon nine holes and nearly caught the leaders – but the Peters claimed a one-shot victory

Janet makes it to the semi's at the English Senior Championship

Janet & GillianCongratulations to Janet Collingham & Gillian Stump (both Sherwood Forest) for their recent successes in the English Senior Amateur Championship held at Stoneham Golf Club (Hampshire)

Janet (competing in her first Senior tournament) qualified 9th for the matchplay stage of the competition with rounds of 76 & 74 whilst Gillian made it into the second flight of match play in 4th place with rounds of 81 & 86.

Gillian won her first round match by 3&2 but unfortunately lost in the quarter finals on the 18th green.

Janet comfortably beat Pat West from Lincolnshire in the first round by 6&5 then had a real battle in the quarter finals. After 5 holes, she was five down against Hampshire star Chris Quinn.

Janet, a former British champion, said afterwards: “I thought I was on my way home! Nothing seemed to go right on the first few holes, I under-clubbed on the first two and then had a three putt.” By the seventh she was five down to Chris, the top seed who has twice won this title. But Janet urged herself to be patient. “I knew I was playing well, I just had to keep going and see what happened.” The seventh was the last hole Janet was to lose. From then on she whittled away at the lead, assisted by an impressive ability to get up and down when necessary. She squared matters on the 15th, took the lead for the first time with a par four on the 17th and signed off for a one-up win.

The semi-final was equally close with Janet narrowly losing on the 18th – a great championship for both Sherwood ladies though!
