to England girl international Alex Peters (Notts) who
successfully defended her title as North of England U16 girls’ champion.
Alex pipped fellow girl international Heidi Baek by one shot in the open
event at Heswall. Both 14 year-olds helped England win the Girls’ Home
Internationals earlier this month.
During the 72-hole event Alex equalled the course record she set last year
with a three-under 71 in the second round.

Notts
were well represented in the Midland Challenge at Radcliffe on Thursday 31
July
Ten girls of handicap 17+ played for Notts in the event. This was an
excellent entry and a chance to compete against & meet girls from
across 12 counties. It is a competition specifically for girls with higher
handicaps & only visits each county once in every 10 years or so. For
this reason, I was really pleased with the number of girls who played.
Well done to everybody, I hope that all of you enjoyed the day,
particularly as it was the first big event for many.
Emily-Mae Hall (Coxmoor) was just pipped into
second place on the back nine for the best gross score, an incredible
score of gross 80. Annabel Bailey (Rushcliffe) won
the days Abraham Trophy with an excellent score of nett 70!
Congratulations to you both! Emily & Annabel were joined by Sophie
Newlove (Beeston) to take the 2nd nett team prize!
The event was also attended by the EWGA Birdie Group selectors and
training officers. They were impressed by the performances of the field so
well done everyone
On behalf of all the girls, a very big thank you to Ann Mather for
organising the event and to all the ladies who so generously gave up their
time to help on the day

Played
over 4 rounds on the par 75 Fairhaven course from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th May, (18
Friday, 18 Saturday & 36 Sunday) Alex Peters (Notts) was
leading by 2 shots at the half way cut. After a disastrous third round of
86 she was trailing Lorraine Mullier from Switzerland by 7 shots and 2
others by 2 shots.
After the worst round Alex had shot in over 2 years her final afternoon
round
was one
of the best, with an amazing 5 under par course record 70 (what
did she have for lunch I wonder, and can I have some!! - ed). Alex won the
title
by 5 shots as the leaders faltered under the pressure of 4 birdies in the
first 6 holes. |

A
record entry of 60 competitors entered this years Junior Girls
Championship at Notts Golf Club on Sunday 27th April
57 girls played and despite the last 2 groups being unable to finish the
18th due to thunder & lightening, there were some very impressive
scores
Alex Peters (Notts) is now the Notts Junior Champion fro 2008 recording
an excellent gross 73 (2 under par) with Jenny Ellis (Notts)
winning the
Intermediate Trophy after her gross 79. Elizabeth Barks (Notts)
won the
Handicap Cup and the Bronze Scratch salver after her 95 - 26 = 69
With 3/4 of the field playing to or below their handicaps, the future
for girls golf across the Midlands is looking very promising.
My thanks to Betty Johnson (NCLGA President) for presenting the prizes,
Bridgett and Joan for manning the desk, Iain & Jill Cheshire for
starting. Also to Janet & Jean for ball spotting, Marion Harris (NCLGA
Captain), Gillian Stump (NCLGA Vice Captain), Notts GC Lady President and
Lady Captain and to Notts Ladies for their support on the day.

Notts Girls Celebrate 2007 Successes at Inaugural Presentation Evening
at Beeston Fields
|
|
 |
|
| |
|
|
|
Notts Junior Girls held their
first junior presentation evening on Saturday 2nd February at Beeston
Fields Golf Club. This was to
celebrate the achievements of the girls throughout 2007. After a lovely
meal, Mr Roy Case, the President elect of the EGU gave a most
enjoyable and informative address to the
girls and their families. 21 girls attended to receive trophies
which had been won during the year and also to receive achievement
certificates. Ages ranged
from 7 to 17, handicaps from 45 to Scratch!
Maddy Larke was presented with the
NCLGA Junior Captains badge for 2008
Starting with the ‘Robins’,
Jane England worked her way through an impressive list of achievements,
these included certificates for every girl and some 17 individual
and team trophies.
County Team colours were awarded
to Maddy Larke, Junior captain for 2008, Danniella Smedley, Emily
Cheshire, Emma Newlove and Lianna Bailey.
Other creditable performances included Katie Best’s runner-up in
the English Girls Championship – Flight 1. and Harriet Owers-Bradley
runner-up in Flight 2. (Unfortunately these 2 girls did not attend,
Harriet is currently studying at Yale University.)
Alex Peters finished 5th at under 15 level.
Emma Newlove finished 17th
and Lianna Bailey, aged 10, finished 9th in the under
13.
At the British Girls, Katie Best,
Alex Peters & Harriet Owers-Bradley all qualified for the knock out
stages.
The Scratch team qualified for the
Regional Finals in Suffolk after their success in the East Midland
division. The girls were also
unbeaten in their 4 Friendly matches.
5 of our girls were selected to be
members of the ELGA coaching squads.
These were Emily Cheshire & Emma Newlove on the East Midlands
Birdie Squad (8 girls in total) Katie Best on the Midlands Select squad (6
girls) Lianna Bailey in the younger East Midlands select squad (4 girls)
and Alex Peters for the England Elite Under 18 squad (6 girls nation wide)
Special Awards were given to
Danniella Smedley & Alex Peters.
Danniella, a relative newcomer to the game, reduced her handicap
from 27 to 12 last year and using her own initiative decided to extend her
interest in golf, applying and being accepted, for an ELGA working party
looking into improving the standard of junior golf.
Alex Peters had an amazing year in 2007. Her success in so many
competitions and her excellent attitude
to the game both on and off the course, left everyone in no doubt
that the final award of the evening, was well deserved.
We hope that this evening will
become an annual event as more and more girls are joining clubs across the
county.
Danniella & Alex both gave
short reports on their achievements and Maddy closed the presentation
wishing everyone golfing success in 2008
I would like to thank you all for
the lovely flowers

On
Sunday 27th January, the Junior Scratch team was treated to a days
coaching with Pat Smillie the EWGA National Junior Coach. We started the
day on the putting green moving on to chipping and pitching. This was most
informative & enjoyable with everyone learning a great deal and adding
useful exercises to their practice routines. Throughout the day, the girls
were set tasks and were marked in two teams, This even included scores for
ordering a healthy lunch !! During the lunch break, Ann Peters taught us
how to use an exercise ball, some managed better than others (see photos -
ed). After lunch on a now lovely afternoon, both teams played 7
holes scoring extra points for pitching, chipping & putting. The day
was rounded off with Pat speaking to the girls about course management
& the importance of being organised. It was a wonderful day, thanks to
Pat Smillie for her enthusiasm and coaching expertise, to Ann for
organising the day & to Notts GC for allowing us to use their
facilities
